The Colorado Department of Wildlife (CDOW) has a dual purpose:
- Protecting and preserving wildlife
- Providing fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities for enjoyment and recreation
Through regulations such as license requirements, bag limits and enforcement dates, the CDOW works to maintain a balance that perpetuates wildlife resources.

Some typical wildlife violations include hunting or fishing without a license, and fraudulent purchase of licenses, for example, non-residents’ purchase of resident licenses or purchase of more than the allowed number of licenses. Illegal trophy and commercial poaching are among other violations. However, the violations of utmost concern are wildlife recreation and poaching that endanger public lives. Authorities use DNA testing, bullet examination and other state of the art forensic services in investigating wildlife violations.
